Shophouses: Our Heritage

27 Sep

Conservation of our heritage is very important in Singapore, perhaps this is one of the few ways to remember the past. Shophouses, both residential and commercial, are important building types in Singapore’s architectural heritage. Shophouses were designed traditionally a business and dwelling unit with a narrow frontage. My journey on foot took me to places I’ve never knew they existed in Singapore. Shophouses are pretty much located everywhere here. Emerald Hill, Tanjong Pagar Road, Chinatown, Beach Road, Joo Chiat Road, Club Street, Kitchener Road, Katong, etc. Do you know that shophouses from say, Katong are very much different from shophouses situated in Club Street? There are many architectural styles influencing the design of shophouses, to name a few; Early, First Transitional, Late, Art Deco, Rococo, Edwardian, Neoclassical and Modern. Here’s a quick guide to identify shophouses.

Even windows belong to different types of style period. The Katong Shophouses clearly have a strong Peranakan influence while Club Street Shophouses have an electric mixture of Modern, Art Deco and Transitional styles. Each walkway (around 5-foot width), windows, tiles and colours have a story to tell. Below shows shophouses of the same area in different period of time. Pastel colours were used with little differentiation of individual houses (not to forget huge shop names were craved onto the pillars for easy identification). Now, shophouses are given a new lease of life with fresh coats of vibrant colours, the intensity that somehow reflects their importance, unwilling to let passers-by forget their existence.

There are a few interesting dwellings that are hidden along the streets of Katong. The Rococo-styled shophouses along East Coast, built well into 1930s, are very much similar in style from those in Little India. From the facade, they are highly decorative and vibrant in colours. Of course, Rococo was a highly decorative style in the 18th century architecture where a lot of motifs like coral and foliage were used along window frames. Turning into a small road along East Coast Road lies a row of single-storey terraces known as ‘barrack houses’. A flight of stairs leads to the main living floor, a typical style seen in Anglo-Malay bungalows. If you peep under the stairs, you can see that there are spacious living spaces at the basement.

Colours in Chinese architecture are meaningful. While red, blue and green are considered auspicious, the Peranakan Chinese grew fond of green for their porcelain and architecture. Today’s shophouses have been transformed, serving many purposes such as clan associations, coffeeshops, living spaces, boutique hotels and temples. Took a lot of pictures while walking around. The architecture is simply breathtaking. There are a few good reads about Singapore’s shophouses in the library which I highly recommend to those who are interested in learning more about our heritage. If you have time, also check out the tours organised by The Original Singapore Walks. (http://www.journeys.com.sg/singaporewalks/index.asp). Personally, I have never been on their tours but their itinerary sounds interesting and  I would love to go for one. The world of shophouses is limitless, be sure to look out for one when you walk around Singapore. STSG

Thanks for this nice post. I have always loved the architecture of the shop houses. I took many pictures of them on my different visits to Singapore. I really love the different colors and designs and the playful mix of both in the same street or area. You are now making me crave some good Singapore cuisine. Nice memories.

What beautiful digital photos! Thanks for making me aware of these awesome houses in Singapore! Do you think you could find these same kind of pictures in another country? http://www.segmation.wordpress.com

Hi there, I believe you can find similar styles in some South East Asia countries. After the colonialisation in the early days, our architecture are somewhat influenced by the West. You can try Malacca or Penang, of Malaysia where they have rich heritage as well. (:

    Hi!

What a lovely surprise to see Singapore featured on Freshly Pressed! Especially since I’m not located in Buenos Aires – a long 28 hour flight from home!

thanks for featuring all these beautiful (although maybe slightly forgotten) parts of our country’s heritage architecture. It’s great to know that SG still has its history embedded despite moving forward with technology and the 21st century.

I’m so proud to be Singaporean!

    Take care!

Love the photos! This is the sort of architecture that helps set Singapore apart – helps make it distinct. If we just imagined the place as the high-rises around Clark Quay, it would simply be another anonymous world city.

I have extremely fond memories, as a writer, of making a pilgimage to Raffles – sitting in the Long Bar, drenched in sweat despite the fans, throwing peanut shells on the floor and pondering Somerset Maugham and the others who made the place their home and muse.

What an interesting style! They remind me of the old colonial buildings in Cairo in a way, especially the ones with the shutters. When I think of Singapore I think of modern, but these buildings are so cute! Great post!

Thank you wordpress for making this freshly pressed and thank you to the writer for writing this article! I’ve always loved shophouses and would always take time to embrace the view while taking long bus rides back home. This article somehow makes me appreciate Singapore more, in a way that although we live in a fast paced society, we tend to forget the beauty shophouses and other buildings that were created in the past offer. In the day and age of technology, a sense of belonging and pride is slowly fading away from the hearts of Singaporeans, duly because we live just for the sake of ‘living’. Perhaps through promoting more articles like these on social media it could spur a love for our country and make them more aware of our unique heritage. Very informative and Kudos for being freshly pressed! Keep on writing ~

I thoroughly enjoyed taking pictures in Tanjong Pagar (2010 and 2011). One of the shophouses was repainted between my two trips.

Love your pictures. We’ve visited Singapore a couple of times, and I was fascinated by the shophouses. Tried to get some pictures, with limited success. So it’s great to not only see yours, but read about the history and the styles.
